Tools to Help You Look Beneath the Surface

Life Abundant.png

Hey, Everyone!

We recently started a series on emotional and spiritual maturity called, "Life Abundant." This past Sunday, Andy preached a message about looking beneath the surface (sermon link) and we want to share three exercises adapted from the Emotionally Healthy Church book to help us process and apply what we're learning. Ready? Let's dive in!

Exercise 1: Finding the Patterns
Patterns in our lives and relationships are often a sign that we're acting out from deep places in our "iceberg," or parts of our lives that are often unseen and unknown to us. They usually reveal a "bug" in our emotional programming, something that plays out over and over again in our lives.  If you or a close loved one notice a "pattern of unhealth" emerging in your life, that is usually a good sign that something's amiss in your internal wiring.

To help find your patterns, fill in the blanks below:

  1. "Most of the time, I feel as if I am ____." (e.g. invisible, unimportant, failing, guilty)
  2. "What often happens to me in relationships is ________." (e.g. people leave me, take advantage of me, betray me)
  3. "Why do others at work or school or church keep on _____me?" (e.g. ignoring, expecting unrealistic things of, criticizing)
  4. "When I am under stress, I often find myself _______." (e.g. fighting, angry, medicating myself, blaming others, losing myself in an unhealthy way)
  5. "When I think about the future, I feel _____." (e.g. depressed, anxious, lost, unsure)

Exercise 2: Asking the "Why" Questions
It takes the grace of God to get at the bottom of our iceberg.  Thankfully, there are "disciplines of reflection" to help us walk in that grace. One of these is the "Why?" or "What's going on?" question.  As we notice patterns in our feelings, situations, and relationships that emerge in our lives, God desires that we ask ourselves the "Why?" question in the safety of His presence.

Some questions to help you figure out, "What's Going On?"
Think about a recent situation in which you have felt some anger, frustration, fear, shame, bitterness, hate, grief, or jealousy.  Use the questions below as a starting point to get at "What's going on?"

  • Rage/anger: "How was I hurt?"
  • Frustration: "What did I feel helpless about?"
  • Shame: "What was I hiding?"
  • Resentment: "What did I expect or hope for?"
  • Depression: "What did I lose?"
  • Jealousy: "Where did I feel inadequate?"

Exercise 3: Seeing Your Blind Spot
Think of a person in your life who loves Jesus, knows you well, and loves you. Invite them to speak into your life by sharing what they see in you.  Ask them to share strengths you have that you're not aware of and also share honestly about some weakness or sin issues that you might not see.

We're praying that the Spirit would give us greater self-awareness that leads to a deeper love of God and others through the transforming power of the gospel!

Hey, Restored church!

We want to let you know that we are going to partner with Bridge of Hope in City Heights for their annual Christmas Bazaar this holiday season!

Bridge of Hope is an incredible, local non-profit, that serves 700+ families in transition, right next door to us! With that said, we want to invite you to get involved! Here's how you can do that:

1. We need donations!  If you want to help you can buy and bring an unwrapped gift for the Christmas Bazaar on Sunday, 11/12, or Sunday, 11/19 during the gathering.  Check out the donations list at the end of this post for specific donations...

2. We need volunteers to set-up, tear-down, and wrap gifts! The Bazaar will be on December 11th, 12th, and 14th at different times during the day and evening. If you’d like to help serve, you can click HERE to pick a time and sign-up!

You're Invited to Restored's Five Year Anniversary Party!

It’s hard to believe but this October marks the fifth anniversary since we planted Restored Uptown! In those five years we’ve seen God touch hundreds of lives through the gospel and open doors for us to plant multiple churches to continue this great gospel adventure.

It’s been an incredible ride and we’re excited to invite you to celebrate with us on Sunday, October 8th.  We’ve got a great night planned with dinner, drinks, and stories from 6:00p-8:00p and a legit DJ and dancing from 8:00p-10:00p

Because of the significant cost of putting on this event we will have a cover charge of $20/person. However, we don't want anyone to miss this because of the cost, so if you can't pay for it, we want you to come anyway! Just email and we'll cover the costs for you.

Also, we won't have childcare for the party, but kids are welcome.  This is like bringing your children to a wedding so please use your discretion and we strongly encourage you to get childcare if your children are under 4 years old.

Please RSVP HERE to register and pay!

Here are the full event details:

Date: Sunday, October 8th
Time: 6:00p-10:00p
Location: Moniker Warehouse (705 16th St. 92101)
Registration: $20, don't forget to RSVP

Join us for Give Love Sunday, May 21st!

Help Us Raise $100,000 to Plant Restored Temecula!

Hey, Everyone!

This Sunday, May 21st, we are celebrating Give Love 2017 at Restored South Bay! The gathering will be at 10:00a, not 9:00a, so enjoy an extra hour of sleep! We are also commissioning Tom and Ebony Logue on Sunday as they move to start Restored Temecula, so you won't want to miss it!

This year, we are seeking to raise $100,000 for Restored Temecula across our three churches!  We raised $42,000 for Brad and Sarah Sarian two years ago to help them start Restored Los Angeles, and would love to top that!

Here are three things to remember:

First, this Sunday we WILL NOT gather in North Park but we WILL GATHER together with Restored South Bay at Rosebank Elementary @ 10:00a, not 9:00a! The address is 80 Flower St, Chula Vista, CA 91910.

Second, we want to challenge you to start praying about how much you'll give above and beyond your normal offering on Sunday, as 100% of the funds raised will go to help Tom and Ebony start Restored Temecula!

Third, you don't have to wait until Sunday, you can GIVE NOW! (be sure to select 'Give Love Restored Temecula' fund)

Lastly, thank you so much for your partnership with us in the gospel! Together we're planting churches, making disciples, and seeing people transformed as they discover who Jesus is and what He's done for them! We couldn't do this without your generosity, love, and support.

In His Grace,

Andy, Royce, & Jarek
